14-year-old, James Bakian recently came to Lyrically-Speaking’s attention with the release of his new EP Unstoppable. Whilst James is young, we can see that he is already going to be a high contender within the music industry. Read on to find out what we thought of the tracks on his new EP.
James Bakian released his new EP Unstoppable on the 16th December 2017. The young singer/song-writer took his first footsteps towards music by writing his first song when he was only 6 years old. Since then, James has learnt to play the piano and drums, continued to write his own songs, released 2 EP’s and runs his own YouTube Channel from his home. When he is not at school, he uploads covers of his favourite songs and produces his own original tracks whilst also trying to perform at as many gigs that his free-time will allow.

The first track on the EP is ‘Unstoppable’ which demonstrates the pop style that James is so heavily influenced by. It begins with some really sweet harmonies and portrays the theme of being in love and in a relationship that is ‘Unstoppable’. If you didn’t have any background on James and just listened to this song, you wouldn’t realise how young he is.

We’re then moved on to ‘Aint Sure’ which begins really mellow with James’ high vocals. The pace is picked up once you reach the chorus. The first verse has a calm piano accompaniment but when the chorus hits, you hear a funky electronic vibe before reverting back to a slow and soft beat. The third song, Colour, also has a piano accompaniment and similar to ‘Ain’t Sure’ it switches the tempo between mellow and upbeat.

Setting a different tone from the first three songs, ‘Know You’ begins like a ballad. Yet, it has a fast tempo and James’ vocals are quick and snappy to blend with the backing. He provides some lovely high notes in this track and you can really hear pop influences such as Charlie Puth or even a young James Arthur within the vocals.

‘Poison’ provides us with another funky chorus and it is clear that James Bakian is already tuning in to his original style to set him out from any other singer. With his age in mind, the lyrics are mature and he has given us a catchy chorus that is hard to get out of your head.
Ending the EP with Lyrically-Speaking’s favourite track is ‘Red Dress’. This song really demonstrates what we can expect from James Bakian in the future. This is a beautiful ballad which could have derived from influences such as Ed Sheeran. Although, James has never been in love, the lyrics to this track could make us think otherwise. He sings of a girl in a red dress leaving him and he just wants to ‘take her hand one last time’. It is an incredible track and well produced.
8/10 – We really enjoyed the EP and as James Bakian grows in age, his music is going to grow with him and just get better and better. We have already seen young artists like Justin Bieber rise overnight from YouTube and we’re expecting James Bakian to be the next big thing in the future.
