Sarah Darling: Winter Wonderland Album Review

As the festive season draws upon us, Lyrically-Speaking reviews Sarah Darling’s Winter Wonderland LP.

Sarah Darling, a country singer/songwriter originating from Nashville, is certainly not a stranger to the UK after touring in 2016. This time she has brought the festive spirit with her after releasing her Christmas LP Winter Wonderland. The LP includes traditional Christmas songs such as ‘Silent Night’, ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Santa Baby’ but in a very unique way.

The LP begins with Sarah’s version of ‘Santa Baby’ and it doesn’t disappoint. Whilst the track still has elements of cheekiness that it is well known for, Sarah makes this her own by providing a jazzy vibe and turning the track into one of sophistication.

Sarah enchants us with her rendition of ‘White Christmas’ that has you dreaming of hot chocolate by the fireplace whilst watching the snow settle through the window. Even though this is a popular Christmas cover song, it is made edgy by the country twist that Sarah gives to it.

We then move into her style of the popular carol, ‘Silent Night’, reminding us in a beautiful way of the story of Christmas. The classic ‘Winter Wonderland’, also taking the title of the LP, provides the festive cheer. The tempo is slower than the original but when the bells begin to ring in the chorus you are left with a warm glow and memories of your own special Christmas’.

Continuing with the mellow tone, Sarah’s soulful voice compliments the traditional ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ track. One of our favourites from the LP is ‘River’ which was originally sung by country singer Joni Mitchell. With Sarah’s angelic vocals, it is clear that this was a good track to choose for the LP as it shows what she is capable of.

Sarah stays true to the melody of ‘White Christmas’ but with a unique twist by including a jazz element with a country spin. The LP is rounded off by the popular ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’. The violin accompaniment puts the listener under a spell right from the start, to then be combined with pristine vocals from Sarah. She does the original song justice and provides us with a modernised version of this classic track.

It is always a big task to take on well-known songs, even more so to tackle a multiplicity of Christmas songs. We think that Sarah has done them justice by using her own interpretation of the tracks to spinkle a bit of Christmas magic. You can imagine listening to this album whilst wrapping the Christmas presents or on a quiet night in with a hot chocolate in hand.

9/10 – Overall, Sarah has produced a strong Christmas album and beautifully covered 8 traditional tracks. Michael Bublé watch out, Sarah Darling is emerging this Christmas!
